Meet the Designer - Sarit Srey

Category: Design CompetitionGloriaBell @ 11:27 am Comments (1)

Sarit Srey is a 26 year old student at the Art Institute of Philadelphia pursuing a BA in Web Design
A lot of Sarit’s inspiration comes from a love of Japanese anime and Japanese music.  We asked Sarit a few questions about inspiration and the LTL Prints Design Contest.

What is your general inspiration when you create?

I love Japanese rock music and was reading a creepy graphic novel which inspired my creations.

What did you learn during the competition process?

Just try something different from the norm. I realized some people liked my design and that encouraged me to continue my path.

In addition to Sarit’s design competition entry “Ambermana”, you can find some of his other anime inspired designs in the LTL Prints online catalog.

Meet the Designer - John Stires

Category: Design, Design CompetitionGloriaBell @ 11:00 am Comments (0)

Another of the designers who entered the LTLPrints 2009 Design Competition was John Stires.

We talked to John about his work, his inspiration and his experience designing for Larger Than Life prints.  Here is what he had to say -

Tell us something about yourself -

My name is John Stires. I am 32 years old and live in New York City. I grew up in Glendale, CA and moved to Santa Barbara in 1994 where I attended UCSB as a biology major with an English minor.  In 1999 I made a big move across the country to NYC and have lived here ever since. As much as my parents hate to hear it, I am an east coaster at heart, and I have fallen in love with the inspiration and pace of NYC.

I discovered aquariums and fish in grade school when I won a goldfish at a local carnival. I named him Fred and kept him in a bowl for years until I got a larger tank. I got my first saltwater aquarium when I was a sophomore in high school and pretty much trial-and-errored my way to success.  When I moved to NYC I rediscovered aquariums and began learning everything all over again with the plethora of information from other hobbyists around the world. Since then I have been able to keep very happy and healthy fish, corals and anemones.

As for art, I should have been an art major, but for some odd reason I thought going down that path was silly. So I struggled through my Biology major at college while acing my English and art classes. If it wasn’t for the arts I’m not sure I would have graduated with a decent GPA.  Ever since I can remember, I have always dabbled in some form of art. It wasn’t until recently that I decided to combine my love of the ocean with art and to try to build a body of work around that passion. I still have a lot to learn, but I really enjoy creating colorful paintings of the fascinating creatures that live in the great blue.

What is your general inspiration when you create?

Much of my inspiration comes from a large aquarium that I have in my studio. When I choose a subject to paint I try to hone in on the unique personalities and behaviors of the fish. My aquarium provides me with constant stimulation while I am at home; I’m always observing the fun things that go on in there.  I also find a lot of inspiration from the multitude of information on the Internet. I have learned a lot about certain fish, corals and anemones from other people’s experiences. With those stories I am able to create the proper compositions and situations for my work.

Why LTL prints?  What encouraged you to enter the design competition? What excites you about working with LTL or their products?

I came across LTL prints a few months back when I was looking for a way to provide aquatic art at a more affordable price than original paintings. I was doing research on vinyl wall decal sites, and I contacted LTL when I heard they work with artists and designers like me to create and print wall artwork. Kendall took a look at my site and we decided to do a test print of my work. I really liked the cloth quality of the prints and decided to go along with LTL for printing my work. The contest seemed like a cool idea so I entered my art in that as well.

What about LTL or its product inspired the design you submitted?

LTL is all about customizing your prints for your needs. With their tools people can virtually create any mural they want at almost any size. I realized that I would need to provide artwork that was not only fun, but also versatile and abundant. With the Internet, people want to do everything custom so I had to figure out a way to provide lots of fish in a relatively short period of time. I also realized that my work would have to look good at a small size as well as a large size. Luckily I used to work as a graphic designer, so I was able to use Photoshop and Illustrator to provide people with high quality artwork that looks good at any size.

What did you learn during the competition process?

The competition was fun. It was great to see all the entries. I think they all looked great. I can’t wait to see more of everyone’s work on LTL prints.

You can see more of John’s work (and his love of fish and the ocean!) at johnstires.com.  You can also see more of John’s designs here in the LTL online catalog.

Design Competition Winner: Brett with his Octopus Print

Category: Design, Design Competition, Partnersschoenrock @ 10:00 am Comments (0)

Brett was the 2nd place winner in LTL Print’s 2009 Design Competition.   Brett was kind enough to share some thoughts with us.  We also have a great video of Carsten and Brett up on the roof talking about the contest and Brett’s work. Take a look!

Brett has an Associate’s degree in Animation and is attending the Art Institute of Philadelphia.  When he is not designing, he loves music, background noise, painting, snowboarding, and being in the right place at the right time.

What is your general inspiration when you create?

My general inspiration is a culmination of what I have done before as well as styles I have experimented with in the past. I look back on a lot of my old work to either spin off that general concept or further refine something along those lines. When I am in newer territory and have a hard time getting inspiration for a piece, whatever it may be, I tend to go on to deviant art, cg society or concept art websites and it usually gets my gears turning.

Why LTL prints?  What encouraged you to enter the design competition? What excites you about working with LTL or their products?

The school I am attending currently, The Art Institute of Philadelphia, constantly sends out e-mails alerting students to opportunities such as the contest that LTL Prints was holding. I have this new found desire to try out new things and grasp opportunities when they arise so I was very much interested in entering this contest and I am glad that I did. I was impressed with the material that the prints are done on and how
versatile it is. I am terrible with stickers, much less 5 ft long stickers, and the fact that it could stick to itself and not be completely ruined made me very happy as I did just that a dozen times before I got it on the wall.

What about LTL or its product inspired the design you submitted?

I haven’t worked too much with larger media, so i was interested to see how the design would turn out. I worked at a screenprinting company prior to moving to Philadelphia so I had a good understanding of cartoony, gradient-based sea creatures, which I illustrated the most for some reason, so I figured I would just retouch on some of that whole idea.

Meet the Designer - Dave Hollinger

Category: Design, Design CompetitionGloriaBell @ 11:00 am Comments (0)

Dave Hollinger, a student at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, was one of the recent entrants in the LTLPrints 2009 Design Competition.

We  asked Dave a few questions about his work, his inspiration and his experience designing for LTL Prints.  Here is what he had to say -

What is your general inspiration when you create?

I always have an idea or concept before I begin. As for the idea’s inspiration, I’d say this comes from different experiences, beliefs, knowledge, or interests that I may have.

Why LTL prints?  What encouraged you to enter the design competition? What excites you about working with LTL or their products?

I learned about the competition through my school’s email service.  After visiting their very clean website, I thought I’d give the competition a try and see if I couldn’t win a ‘life-sized’ print of my design. Plus, even if I didn’t win, my design would be entered into their catalog giving it a chance of being sold.
What about LTL or its product inspired the design you submitted?

Seeing some examples of their prints (on LTLprints.com), I really tried to push the colors of my design. My design incorporated the full color spectrum because I couldn’t help but imagine how spectacular
the print would look once blown up and on someone’s wall.

What did you learn during the competition process?

After submitting my design and speaking with Kendall, one of the co-founders of LTL, I learned how dedicated LTL was to their business.  I had a question about the process and he was available, online, around 8 p.m. Even though I didn’t win, it was inspiring to see someone going 110%, working late into the evening, all while promoting different artists through their website.

You can see more of Dave’s work at davehollinger.com.  You can also see more of Dave’s designs here in the LTL online catalog.

Meet the Designer - Dallas Shaw

Category: Design, Design CompetitionGloriaBell @ 4:16 pm Comments (0)

Dallas Shaw was a recent entrant in the LTLPrints 2009 Design Competition.  She is also a contributor to LTL’s ever growing catalog of prints.   Dallas is a full time artist and designer whose portfolio includes work in magazines such as Brides, as well as design and illustration work for many other businesses.

We  took a moment to ask Dallas a few questions about her work, her inspiration and her experience designing for LTL Prints.  Here is what she had to say -

Just the facts about Dallas -

Dallas Shaw, age 29, Newark, DE, Full time artist & designer.  My interests? That’s what I do- all of the time! 7 days a week!

What is your general inspiration when you create?

I am highly inspired by the fashion industry. You can probably see that with most of my work.

Why LTL prints?  What encouraged you to enter the design competition? What excites you about working with LTL or their products?

I had been familiar with LTL for a bit and I had been dying to do something with wall flats for a while so this was a great way to try it out!

What about LTL or its product inspired the design you submitted?

I love that their products are removable and easy, come in different sizes. They are easy to work with and they meet all of my needs as an artist. I couldn’t wait to see how my products turned out.

What did you learn during the competition process?
I sketched about 25 ideas and narrowed it down to ten, certain things look better than you think on a wall! And some things you think would look great don’t really work out… I tossed more than half of my original ideas. I hope people like what we ended up with.

You can see more of Dallas’ work at www.dallasshaw.com, http://dillydallas.blogspot.com & www.dallasshaw.etsy.com.  You can also see more of Dallas’ designs by searching “Dallas” in the LTL online catalog.

LTLprints.com - Design Competition

Category: Art, Design Competition, Events, PhiladelphiaCarsten @ 2:12 am Comments (2)

When we launched LTLprints.com we made it a priority to cultivate a community of designers - they will help bring core content to our catalog and customers.  One of the ways we are starting to do that is visiting highly passionate students at local Philadelphia art schools.  Earlier today we visited the Art Institute of Philadelphia (only 2 blocks away from our headquarters) and spoke to a number of impressive up and coming rock stars regarding the launch of the first ever LTLprints design competition.

We invited them to join our design competition and we would like to extend the same offer to you. Over the next four weeks we will take submissions to our online catalog - along the way stopping to smell the roses and meet you, the designers, through an interview on this blog.

Here is how it works;

  • Create your free LTLprints account
  • Use those creative genes to come up with any design that would make for a great wall print
(art work, pictures, collages, shillouettes, etc…).
  • Upload a .jpg of your artwork and let us know that you would like it to be entered for the competition.

How to compete:

  • Send you Vector or Photoshop file to designcompetition [@] LTLprints.com
  • We want to meet you.  Send us a short bio and any links to your other online work.
  • Submissions must be received by Monday, February 23.

Who is the Jury?

  • The community, silly.   In a few weeks we will open up a voting system for submitted designs and you (and your friends, mom & dad, your coworkers, whomever you want) can come rate thumbs up on designs, the one with the most thumbs up wins.  Pretty simple, right?  Get your facebook groups ready!

What is in it for you?

  • The winner(s) gets his or her designs printed for free!
    1st place: Free 7ft large  (84”x52”)
    2nd: 5ft (60”x38”)
    3rd: 3ft (38”x24”)
  • Get exposure - we will try to feature every competing designer on this blog and we will do our duty to introduce you to our customers.  We pinky swear.
  • Bulk the resume!  We realize that not everyone competing is a student, but if you are, this is a great event to point to in those future interviews.
  • Oh, and don’t forget that you get to set your own design price associated with your work.  The design price is what a customer will pay you when they buy your print.  This is a value set by you, but most of our designers are pricing their work between $1 and $10.
  • The joy of helping a hard working startup get off the ground.  That’s worth something right?  Kama points or something… We’re sure of it!
  • A free beer at a Philadelphia pub of your choosing. Mmm. Beer.

When?

  • Submit your items latest by February 22, 11:59pm EST
  • Voting will end on March 8th.
  • Winners will be notified on this blog.

Questions?

  • We are here to help.  Leave any unanswered questions in the comment box below.
  • Or just contact us.

We’re super excited to get things rolling.  We hope you are too!

UPDATE:  Download this bio template and introduce yourself to the crowd.
